The adjoining neighbourhoods of Wicker Park and Bucktown, northwest of downtown Chicago, attracted designers and artists in the early 1980s and 1990s, who rented large lofts at low rents. These neighbourhoods have become gentrified, but the arty atmosphere remains and the streets lined with shops, restaurants and old houses are totally charming. Take the Bloomingdale Trail, a planted walkway overlooking the surrounding gardens.
