Elephant is proof that tiny is often mighty. The space is decidedly diminutive but big-deal Chef Justin Ell (Lee) runs the show here, and diners may just feel as if they're dining in the chef's apartment. It's a wonder how he does all of this in this space but he makes the most of it, delivering a parade of plates in an "omakase" style. A tiny sachet of charred cabbage filled with roasted, Xian-spiced lamb, kale and black vinegar kicks things off. Creamy beef tartare with smoked oysters and bonito-flavored horseradish is rich and luxurious, then a dish of winter lettuce tossed in a potent fermented chili sauce with deep fried panko on top may seem simple but reflects this chef's vision for complementary, yet contrasting, cuisine.
